Deer hunters across the River Valley are back in the woods this week for what many still call muzzleloader season.
Arkansas’ alternative firearms deer season opened Saturday, October 17, and runs through Sunday, October 25, in Pope, Yell and surrounding counties.
The season isn’t just for traditional muzzleloaders anymore. For the third year, hunters can also use certain rifles that fire straight-wall cartridges, along with qualifying large-bore air rifles.
The Arkansas Game and Fish Commission says cooler temperatures could make for better hunting conditions this week. Wildlife officials recommend watching for acorn-producing trees, particularly around areas that have held water during the recent dry weather.
The regular modern gun deer season opens November 14. See full dates and limits by zone here.
