Atkins continued its impressive run through Class 3A football Friday night, Lamar came away with a hard-fought win over neighboring Pottsville, and Hector got back in the win column as Week 8 of the Arkansas high school football season brought another round of important conference matchups.
It was a tougher night for several other River Valley teams. Russellville’s homecoming celebration ended with a loss to Fort Smith Southside, while Dover, Dardanelle, Clarksville, Danville and Two Rivers also came up short.
With just two weeks remaining in the regular season, conference standings and playoff positioning are taking on greater importance.
One of the night’s most competitive local matchups unfolded in Lamar, where the Warriors defeated the Pottsville Apaches 36–29 in a Class 4A conference showdown.
Pottsville entered the game ranked No. 13 in Class 4A by Hooten’s Arkansas Football, carrying a 6–1 record after a narrow 28–26 victory over Mena the previous week.
Lamar, meanwhile, was looking to build on a 30–16 road win against Waldron. The two programs have developed a competitive rivalry, splitting their previous six meetings dating back to 2020.
Friday’s seven-point victory gave Lamar its second consecutive win and improved the Warriors to 6–2 overall. Pottsville dropped to 6–2, leaving both teams with plenty at stake over the final two weeks of conference play.
The Atkins Red Devils showed once again why they are among the teams to watch in Class 3A, rolling past Jessieville 46–6 at home.
The victory capped off homecoming week for Atkins, where Taylor Willcutt was crowned the 2026 homecoming queen. She was joined on the homecoming court by Abby Gooden, Brady Bjorgum, Briley Alexander, Ricki Hernandez, Aubrey May and Chloe Brashear.
Ranked fourth in the state in Hooten’s Class 3A poll entering the week, Atkins had already put together six consecutive wins following its season-opening loss to Heber Springs.
Friday’s victory made it seven straight, improving the Red Devils to 7–1 overall and 5–0 in conference play.
Atkins has been particularly productive offensively this season, scoring at least 40 points in every game since its opener. The Red Devils had reached 63 points in three previous victories, including last week’s win over Conway Christian.
Jessieville entered Friday with a 3–4 record and three conference wins, but the Red Devils held the Lions to just six points.
With games against Two Rivers and Danville remaining, Atkins is in a strong position heading toward the postseason.
It was a busy homecoming Friday in Russellville, but the Cyclones ended the night with a loss, falling 50–29 to Fort Smith Southside at Cyclone Stadium.
The day included the Russellville High School Athletic Hall of Fame induction ceremony, a student pep rally, the annual homecoming parade and the evening’s homecoming coronation.
Senior Yareli Mondragon was crowned Russellville High School’s 2026 homecoming queen. The senior members of this year’s court also included Autumn Estes, Valeria Cano-Gatica, Olivia Odom and Ella Cantu.
Representing the junior class were Yoselin Chacon-Castillo, Braelyn Ann Herring, Grace Olson and Bre’ona Westbrook. Sophomore attendants were Makayla Harrell, Ava Hixson and Grace Ruple, while freshmen Leah Taylor and Hayllin Arias rounded out the court.
This year’s Athletic Hall of Fame inductees included Avery Taylor, Trystan Newberry, Jenni Belongia and Susanna Manns.
On the football field, Russellville faced a Southside team that had begun to find its footing in the 6A West Conference.
The Mavericks entered Friday following a dramatic 36–35 victory over Little Rock Catholic, a game they preserved by stopping a potential game-winning two-point conversion with just 13 seconds remaining.
Russellville had also shown offensive promise in recent weeks. Running back Sam Callahan rushed for 182 yards and two touchdowns in last week’s 23–14 loss to Van Buren, while the Cyclones had put up 50 points against Lake Hamilton earlier this month.
But Southside’s offense proved too much Friday night, putting up 50 points and handing Russellville its fourth consecutive defeat.
The Cyclones fell to 1–7 on the season and will travel to Little Rock next Friday to face Catholic High at War Memorial Stadium.
The Hector Wildcats returned to the win column Friday with a 34–20 victory over the Mountainburg Dragons.
Hector entered the contest looking to recover from consecutive conference losses to Magnet Cove and Mount Ida.
The Wildcats were ranked No. 13 in Class 2A by Hooten’s heading into Week 8, despite having lost three of their previous four games.
Mountainburg came into the matchup with a 2–5 record and hopes of building on a victory over Hackett.
Hector’s win improved the Wildcats to 5–3 overall and provided an important boost as the team heads into the final two games of the regular season.
The Wildcats will return home to host Hackett next Friday before closing the regular season against Bigelow.
Dover traveled to Mena hoping to bounce back from last week’s loss at Booneville, but the Pirates fell 42–14 to the Bearcats.
Both teams entered the game with 3–4 overall records, although Mena held the better conference position. Friday’s loss dropped the Pirates to 3–5 overall and 1–4 in conference play.
Dover returns home next Friday to face Ozark, one of the strongest teams in Class 4A.
The Dardanelle Sand Lizards faced another difficult conference opponent Friday, falling 63–23 on the road against Harrison.
The Goblins entered the game ranked No. 13 in Class 5A after consecutive victories over Clarksville and Pea Ridge, scoring a combined 108 points in those two contests.
Dardanelle had struggled offensively in its previous two outings, scoring a combined 10 points against Greenwood and Alma.
The Sand Lizards found more success on the scoreboard Friday, putting up 23 points, but could not contain Harrison’s high-powered offense.
The loss dropped Dardanelle to 2–6 overall and 1–4 in conference play.
Dardanelle will host Farmington next Friday.
Clarksville’s difficult season continued Friday as the Panthers fell 38–2 on the road against Farmington.
The Cardinals entered the contest ranked fourth in Class 5A by Hooten’s, carrying a 6–1 record despite suffering their first loss of the season to Greenwood the previous week.
Clarksville, meanwhile, was still searching for its first victory after opening the season with seven consecutive losses. Friday’s matchup against Farmington proved another tough challenge.
Clarksville dropped to 0–8 overall and 0–5 in the 5A West Conference.
The Danville Little Johns traveled to Glen Rose for an important Class 3A conference matchup Friday but fell 51–17 to the Beavers.
Danville entered the contest with a 4–3 record, having lost two straight games after opening conference play with consecutive victories.
Glen Rose, ranked ninth in Class 3A by Hooten’s entering the week, was looking to strengthen its position near the top of the conference standings.
The Beavers had defeated Two Rivers 51–8 the previous week, continuing an offensive stretch led in part by quarterback Gage Hood.
Friday’s result marked the third consecutive loss for Danville, dropping the Little Johns to 4–4 overall.
Glen Rose improved to 5–3 and 4–1 in conference play.
The Two Rivers Gators traveled to Perryville on Friday night, where the Mustangs celebrated homecoming with a 63–0 victory.
Perryville had entered the game on a two-game winning streak and was looking for its third consecutive victory. The Mustangs capped the week with their most lopsided victory of the season.
For Two Rivers, the loss continued a difficult campaign. The Gators fell to 0–8 overall and remain without a conference victory.
One other significant Class 4A result came Friday night as Ozark defeated previously unbeaten Booneville 34–18 in a matchup of two highly ranked conference opponents.
Ozark entered the game ranked fourth in Class 4A, while Booneville was ranked seventh. The outcome adds another wrinkle to the conference race as Lamar, Pottsville and other area teams fight for postseason positioning.
Atkins, meanwhile, continues to lead the way among the local Class 3A programs with its seven-game winning streak, while Hector’s victory puts the Wildcats back on positive footing heading into the season’s final stretch.
With only two regular-season games remaining for most teams, next Friday’s games could play a decisive role in determining conference finishes and playoff seeding.
