With deep love, heavy hearts, and endless admiration, we announce the passing of Jerry Canerday on August 28, 2026, in Heber Springs, Arkansas. A devoted husband, father, grandfather, and a true friend to many, Jerry was a man who left an unmistakable mark on the world. To his family and everyone who knew him well, he was a larger-than-life figure whose presence filled every room with warmth, wisdom, and a sense of security.

Jerry did not just speak about love; he lived it. He showed his devotion through his everyday actions, teaching his family the invaluable life lessons of unwavering honesty, dedication, and deep respect. A member of Russellville Missionary Baptist Church, his life was a testament to his values.

An entrepreneur at heart, Jerry partnered with the love of his life and wife of 65 years, Nancy, to successfully own and operate A-1 Exhaust until 1997. But Jerry’s thirst for knowledge and passion for guiding others led him down a beautiful second path as an educator. A proud lifelong learner, he graduated from Arkansas Tech University in 1988 and went on to earn his Master’s degree from the University of Arkansas in 1991. After teaching at the University of Arkansas, Jerry returned to his beloved roots, inspiring countless students as a Geography professor at Arkansas Tech University until his retirement in 2008.

Beyond his professional life, Jerry was in the quiet patience of hunting and fishing. Yet, nothing compared to the absolute joy he found in spending quality time with his grandchildren. Jerry was a natural mentor, a steady anchor who was always there, and always willing to teach—whether it was a complex classroom lesson or a profound, gentle truth about life. His guidance will echo in the hearts of his family for generations to come.

Jerry is reunited in heaven with his parents, Lonus and Hester Canerday, who preceded him in death.

His beautiful legacy of love, hard work, and family devotion will carry on through his beloved wife, Nancy Canerday of Heber Springs, AR; his daughter, Rhonda Banks and husband Donald of Heber Springs, AR; his son, Jerry B. Canerday and wife Stacy of Little Rock, AR.

He also leaves behind his loving sisters, Elisabeth Ryder and Jo Barton, both of Russellville, AR; his brother, Charles Canerday and wife Betty Jo of Little Rock, AR; and five grandchildren who adored him: Steve Saxon (Cecilia) of Jacksonville, FL; Zachary Saxon of Russellville, AR; Matthew Saxon (Olivia) of Heber Springs, AR; Bruce Canerday (Danielle) of Celina, TX; and Heather Foster (Chase) of Springdale, AR. Jerry’s warmth will continue to shine brightly through his 11 great-grandchildren and 2 great-great-grandchildren, all of whom he loved beyond measure.
