And according to Airport Director Patrick Karp, it makes the city-owned facility an important part of Russellville’s transportation system and economic development efforts.

Located about two miles southeast of downtown, Russellville Regional Airport has been serving the community since 1960. While many residents will never board an airplane there, the airport provides something that highways and railroads cannot: a direct connection to destinations across the country for businesses, medical services and private aircraft operators.

Karp compares its purpose to another familiar city service.

“Public works takes care of the roads,” he explained. “We just take care of another mode of transportation.”

An important piece of economic development

One of the airport’s most valuable assets is its 5,505-foot runway, which allows it to accommodate many corporate jets that cannot use smaller airports in surrounding communities.

Karp said a runway of at least 5,000 feet is often required by the insurance policies of corporate aircraft operators. Russellville’s runway gives the city an advantage when companies are considering where to locate facilities or conduct business.

“It makes it that much more appealing to build here,” Karp said.

For companies operating factories, managing construction projects or evaluating potential investments, the convenience can be significant. Executives, engineers and other personnel can fly directly into Russellville rather than landing at a commercial airport and making a lengthy drive.

That access also serves businesses outside Pope County.

Karp pointed to a recent visit by representatives involved in a Green Bay Packaging project in Morrilton. They used Russellville’s airport while working on the project, illustrating how its services extend throughout the Arkansas River Valley.

He said he could name roughly 20 companies that regularly use the airport for business travel.

The economic benefits go beyond convenience. Visiting crews may purchase fuel, rent vehicles, eat in local restaurants or stay in hotels. The airport also supports aviation businesses and jobs associated with its operations.

An Arkansas statewide airport system study, using 2016 aviation activity as a baseline, estimated that Russellville Regional supported 41 jobs and generated approximately $3.69 million in annual economic output, including direct activity and broader economic effects.

The study classified Russellville as a Level 4 airport, a category intended to serve most business and corporate aircraft while continuing to accommodate general aviation.

More activity than many people realize

Although the airport doesn’t have scheduled passenger flights, aircraft come and go regularly.

In 2025, Russellville Regional Airport recorded 9,307 aircraft operations, including takeoffs and landings by everything from small recreational planes to corporate jets and medical helicopters.

Smaller piston-engine aircraft accounted for the largest share, with 6,067 operations. Helicopters recorded another 2,519 operations, followed by jets with 407 and turboprop aircraft with 314.

In aviation, an operation means one takeoff or one landing, so an aircraft arriving and later departing accounts for two operations. Karp also noted that some smaller airplanes don’t carry the electronic equipment used by the airport’s tracking system, meaning actual activity can be higher than the recorded totals.

Among the airport’s regular users is Survival Flight, which bases an air medical helicopter at the facility. Its presence gives the airport a role in emergency medical transportation in addition to business and recreational aviation.

Military aircraft are another familiar sight. Karp said Black Hawk helicopters frequently conduct practice landings and takeoffs, while other military aircraft occasionally stop while traveling through the region. C-130 transport planes also pass through the airspace around Russellville, although they do not land typically at the airport.

The airport has also hosted Apache helicopters, Hueys, Cobras and military King Air aircraft.

For the occasional visitor, the airport can become a gateway to Russellville itself. During the April 2024 total solar eclipse, the airport welcomed approximately 100 visitors, according to the city’s website.

A full-service stop for pilots

Russellville Regional is what aviators call a general aviation airport. Rather than handling scheduled airline flights, it serves private, business and other non-airline aircraft.

The airport is untowered, meaning there is no air traffic controller stationed in a tower directing aircraft on the ground or in the immediate traffic pattern.

Instead, pilots generally announce their positions and intentions over a shared radio frequency, coordinating with other aircraft in the area.

On the ground, the airport provides the services pilots need to continue their journeys.

Those include aviation gasoline for smaller piston-engine aircraft and Jet-A fuel for turbine-powered airplanes and helicopters. Self-service aviation gasoline is available around the clock, while staff can be called out for after-hours assistance.

Fuel sales are an important part of airport operations. Karp said Russellville sold 94,980 gallons of jet fuel in 2025, its first full year participating in the Corporate Aircraft Association fuel program.

The nationwide program allows participating airports to offer competitive fuel pricing to member aircraft operators, helping attract pilots who can choose among several airports when planning their trips.

Those choices matter. A pilot may select an airport based on fuel prices, runway length, available services or simply the experience of being treated well on a previous visit.

Russellville also maintains two courtesy cars that visiting pilots can use to get around town. The airport also has two aircraft maintenance facilities and several options for storing airplanes.

Four groups of T-hangars accommodate smaller aircraft in individual spaces, while open-air covered hangars can shelter approximately a dozen additional planes. There are also privately constructed hangars on airport property, with the city leasing the land to their owners.

The airport has room for additional development, and its master plan identifies areas where hangars and taxiways could eventually expand.

Flying isn’t just for business

Corporate aircraft may be important to the local economy, but another segment of aviation has been growing at Russellville: people who fly simply because they love it.

Karp said he has seen a noticeable increase in recreational flying during the past five or six years, particularly among owners of smaller, relatively affordable airplanes.

Taylorcraft aircraft and other small taildraggers—airplanes with two main wheels and a smaller wheel beneath the tail—have become especially popular.

He recalled how one local pilot purchased a small taildragger, followed by another and then another. Before long, the airport had a sizable collection of the little airplanes.

Some pilots spend their time practicing takeoffs and landings. Others fly over the Arkansas River or explore the surrounding countryside from the air.

For those pilots, the airport is less about getting somewhere quickly and more about enjoying the experience of flying.

Keeping the airport operating

For all the different aircraft and services, Russellville Regional operates with a relatively small staff.

Karp oversees the airport alongside two full-time employees and a weekend employee. Their responsibilities range from fueling airplanes and helping pilots to maintaining equipment, managing fuel prices and handling administrative work.

But Karp said everyone shares the same responsibility when an aircraft arrives.

“We’re all linemen. We’re there to serve the flying public,” he said.

Maintaining the airport also requires significant long-term planning.

Runways, taxiways and aviation lighting systems must meet federal standards, and improvements can be expensive.

One project currently being addressed involves the airport’s aging precision approach path indicator lights, commonly called PAPI lights. These lights help pilots determine whether they are approaching a runway at the proper angle.

Karp said the existing systems had reached the end of their useful lives and were taken out of service while replacement work and the required FAA flight inspection are arranged.

The project is supported by state grant funding.

Other long-term needs include taxiway lighting and pavement improvements. Karp said federal aviation grants, with Arkansas covering the required matching funds for qualifying projects, are an important source of support for maintaining the facility.

A different kind of gateway

Russellville Regional Airport occupies a unique place in the community.

It’s an economic development asset for industries that depend on efficient travel, a base for medical helicopters and agricultural operations, a stopover for military aircraft and a home for recreational pilots.

It’s also a place where the aviation community maintains a certain culture of cooperation. Pilots share information, help one another and frequently develop relationships with the people working at airports they visit.

Karp likens that atmosphere to a golf course, where participants observe unwritten courtesies and look out for one another.

And while Russellville may seem like a long way from major aviation hubs, its runway puts the community within a relatively short flight of countless destinations.

As Karp put it, “The world gets real small when you’re going 200 miles an hour.”

The next aircraft to land at Russellville Regional Airport might be a corporate jet carrying business executives, a military Black Hawk helicopter practicing landings, or a small two-seat airplane whose […]

[384

375
post-2813","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-business-agriculture","city-russellville

More than a runway: Why Russellville Regional Airport matters to the River Valley - River Valley Record

{"@context":"https://schema.org","@graph":[{"@type":"Article","@id":"https://rivervalleyrecord.com/russellville-regional-airport/#article","isPartOf":{"@id":"https://rivervalleyrecord.com/russellville-regional-airport/"},"author":{"name":"Misty Hale","@id":"https://rivervalleyrecord.com/#/schema/person/1f3c2383919cc3650f3252ff000461e5"},"headline":"More than a runway: Why Russellville Regional Airport matters to the River Valley","datePublished":"2026-10-27T15:36:03+00:00","dateModified":"2026-10-28T03:12:49+00:00","mainEntityOfPage":{"@id":"https://rivervalleyrecord.com/russellville-regional-airport/"},"wordCount":1498,"commentCount":0,"image":{"@id":"https://rivervalleyrecord.com/russellville-regional-airport/#primaryimage"},"thumbnailUrl":"https://rivervalleyrecord.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/10/russellville-regional-airport-graphic.jpg","articleSection":["Business &
