RUSSELLVILLE — Weather-related conditions caused one of the two nuclear reactors at Arkansas Nuclear One to shut down Tuesday morning, Nov. 3, according to a statement from Entergy.
The company said operators at the nuclear power plant responded according to established procedures and safely stabilized Unit 2 following the shutdown.
Residents in the area may have noticed steam coming from the plant during recovery operations. Entergy said the steam was normal and did not pose a safety concern.
“This steam is clean, non-radioactive water vapor associated with plant recovery activities,” the company said in its statement.
Unit 2 remains safe and stable as crews work to return it to service. Entergy did not provide an estimated timeline for restarting the reactor.
The company also emphasized that the incident did not pose a danger to employees or nearby residents.
“There has been no impact to the health and safety of plant personnel or the public,” Entergy said.
Arkansas Nuclear One, located on Lake Dardanelle just outside Russellville, operates two nuclear reactors that generate electricity for the region.
Entergy did not specify which weather-related conditions caused the shutdown or whether Unit 1 was affected.
